As previously reported, a majority of the Lincoln Center Festival's theatrical programming will be devoted to the Royal Shakespeare Company's repertory engagement at the Park Avenue Armory, which will run July 6-Aug. 14.
RSC will construct a full-scale replica of its intimate thrust stage Courtyard Theatre within the Armory to house productions of As You Like It, Romeo and Juliet, Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar, King Lear and The Winter's Tale. For full details, read Playbill.com's article here.
Also presented will be the U.S. premiere of the Kanagawa Arts Theatre's The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, July 21-23 at Frederick P. Rose Hall. Based on the novel by Yukio Mishima, Amon Miyamoto (Pacific Overtures) will direct the work about "Japan in the very troubled time surrounding World War II. It is a stunning tale of the power of beauty and how it corrupts the mind of a young Buddhist acolyte, Mizoguchi, who becomes obsessed with beauty’s destruction." The cast will feature Go Morita, Sousuke Takaoka and Shunsuke Daito.
Seán O'Casey's The Silver Tassie will run July 24-31 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College. Hynes (The Beauty Queen of Leenane, The Cripple of Inishmaan) will direct original cast members Eamon Morrissey, John Olohan, Garrett Lombard, Charlie Murphy and Clare Dunne.
The classic "takes place during and just after World War I and tells the story of two teenage football heroes who are plucked from the tenements of Dublin and thrown onto the battlefields of France. The 'tassie' of the title refers to a silver trophy cup and to a poem by Robert Burns called The Silver Tassie about a young man going off to war. This epic staging of one of O'Casey's great plays involves all the resources of the theater, including live music and dance." Festival programming will also include the world premiere of David Michalek's large-scale visual art installment "Portraits in Dramatic Time" (July 5-31), featuring "hyper-slow-motion video performance-portraits" of artists from around the world. The work will be projected onto an 85 ft. wide by 45 ft. screen installed on the facade of the David H. Koch Theater. Among the artists represented are Patti LuPone, Marin Ireland, Roger Rees, Alan Rickman, Lili Taylor, James Thierree, Neal Huff, Chris Chalk and more.
The Royal Danish Opera and Orchestra will present the U.S. premiere of Selma Ježková, the opera based on Lars von Trier’s musical film "Dancer in the Dark." Poul Ruders composed the score, with a libretto by Henrik Engelbrecht based on the original screenplay.
Kasper Holten will direct a cast including Ylva Kihlberg, Palle Knudsen, Hanne Fischer, Guido Paevatalu, Gert Henning-Jensen and Ulla Kudsk Jensen. The original film famously starred Björk and Catherine Deneuve. The English-language presentation will be presented July 29 at the Rose Theatre.
Peter Brook will also helm his intimate, 90-minute staging of Mozart's A Magic Flute July 5-21 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater.
