Living in the Wind, a new romantic drama starring Cheryl Freeman (The Civil War, Play On!) and Chad L. Coleman (North Atlantic) as ex-slaves trying to recapture the love in their marriage is now in an open run at Off-Broadway's American Place Theatre. Performances began Oct. 29 with a close date previously set for Dec. 31. Regge Life (Do Lord Remember Me, "The Cosby Show") directs.
Set in the South after the end of the Civil War, Sarah and Isaiah, two lovers torn apart by slavery and war, try to reconcile their marriage and create a new life of freedom together. Their memories of their lives before, however, haunt them in the literal ghosts who come to recount the tale of their enslaved existence.
Freeman's last Broadway appearance was as Bessie Toler, a slave woman cruely ripped from her husband in Frank Wildhorn's musical, The Civil War. She also played the Acid Queen in The Who's Tommy. Coleman performed opposite Willem Dafoe and Steve Busemi in North Atlantic and also played in A Soldier's Play and Man in the Polyester Suit.
1997 Obie Award winner for sustained excellence Arthur French and Lizan Mitchell (Having Our Say) are also featured in Living in the Wind, alongside Nathan Hinton and Keesha Sharp.
Designing Living in the Wind are Beowulf Boritt (sets), Helen L. Simmons (costumes), Chad McArver (lighting) and David Wright (sound). Tickets are $40-$30. The American Place Theatre is located at 111 West 46th Street. For reservations, call (212) 239-6200.
