Classic Arts News London Festival Celebrates Composer Harrison Birtwistle Birtwistle Games, a three-week concert series in honor of Harrison Birtwistle's 70th birthday, opens tonight at the Purcell Room in London.
Tonight's concert features the UK premiere of the composer's Orpheus Elegies, along with Linoi and Nenia, the Death of Orpheus. Also on the program are works by Bach and Kawai Shiu.

The works presented over the course of the festival are drawn from Birtwistle's entire career, and include two London premieres: Night's Black Bird, performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi, and an opera, called The Second Mrs. Kong, based on the legends of King Kong and Orpheus.

Birtwistle Games runs through November 11, and is accompanied by Sliding Lines, an exhibition of the composer's drawings.
