Andrew Lloyd Webber's London The Phantom of the Opera celebrates its 10th anniversary today, Oct. 9. The original London production opened Oct. 9, 1986, and a spokesperson for the Peter Thompson Group in London said the U.K. Company will mark the date with a "gala performance." Following the show, Sarah Brightman, the original Christine, will sing two numbers from the show accompanied by Phantoms and Raouls of the past and present. Webber will accompany on the piano. Following the performance will be a "Masquerade" Ball at the Park Lane Hotel.

followed by a Masquerade Ball for invited guests -- though members of the Phantom Appreciation Society have expressed unhappiness at the comparatively small number of tickets alloted to fans of the show.

A spokesperson for the Broadway production said there will be no special celebration of the date in New York -- that will likely be saved for Jan. 26, 1998, when the version at the Majestic Theatre marks its tenth anniversary.
