According to London's Daily Mail, the ITV television network, which is currently screening the casting show "Grease is the Word" to be followed by a West End revival of Grease, is set to hold talks about giving the disco classic the reality television treatment.
It is thought ITV hopes to broadcast the show next year prior to a West End stage version of Saturday Night Fever.
Currently ITV’s "Grease is the Word," whose judging panel includes producer David Ian, is being screened head-to-head with Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Any Dream Will Do" on the BBC.
While Lloyd Webber's show is looking to discover a new Joseph for the forthcoming West End revival of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Ian's is searching for the next Sandy Dumbrowski and Danny Zuko, the roles made famous by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta in the movie version.
Both television shows follow the success of "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria?," which discovered Connie Fisher for the role of Maria von Trapp in the current West End revival of The Sound of Music. While Grease opens at the Piccadilly Theatre on August 8 (previews begin July 25), Joseph officially opens on July 17, following previews from July 6.
