Hamlet, which will be produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and presented by the Barbican, will run for a 12-week season August-October 2015, with further information and booking details to be announced in May 2014. It will be directed by Lyndsey Turner, recently represented on Broadway by Machinal at the American Airlines Theatre and in the West End by Chimerica.

In a press statement, Friedman commented, "I’m thrilled to be producing Hamlet with Lyndsey and Benedict and we are all delighted that the magnificent Barbican has agreed to present the show. Having recently produced Lyndsey’s extraordinary production of Chimerica in the West End, I am delighted to be working with her again and it is so great to be working with one of the most gifted and exciting actors of his generation, Benedict Cumberbatch, in the title role."

Other Shakespeare productions that will play the Barbican include the previously announced transfers of the RSC's Stratford-upon-Avon productions of Henry IV Parts I and II starring Antony Sher as Falstaff, Jasper Britton as Henry IV and Alex Hassell as Prince Hal, under the direction of Gregory Doran, and Russian director Dmitry Krymov's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream (As You Like It), presented in association with the RSC and originally commissioned for the World Shakespeare Festival in 2012.

The Barbican's International Ibsen season will, according to press materials, "bring together three productions from some of the most experimental and innovative international theatre directors who have re-interpreted Ibsen’s work as a pertinent mirror for our times." The productions include Thomas Ostermeier directing the Schaubühne Berlin in An Enemy of the People; Théâtre National de Nice with Irina Brook's version of Peer Gynt; and Belvoir Sydney with young Australian director Simon Stone's re-imagining of The Wild Duck for the modern stage.
