Lindsey Coulson, Luke Evans, Sue Johnston and Matt Ryan are featured in the cast under the author's own direction.
Set on the east side of Cardiff in the 1950s, Gill's play recalls the friendship between two boys and the relationship with their mothers, and the tragedy of the things that go unsaid and are forever unresolved. It was first performed at the Royal Court Theatre in 1976, and was last revived in London at the National's Cottesloe Theatre in 1983, when Gill also directed it.
Coulson's recent theatre credits include Blame (Arcola Theatre), Snakes (Hampstead Theatre) , Young Writers' Festival (Royal Court) and Hamlet (Shaw Theatre). For television her work includes "Doctor Who," "New Tricks," "The Street," "The Stepfather," "She's Gone," "MIT," "Danielle Cable: Eyewitness," "Stretford Wives," "Manchild," "Clocking Off" and "Eastenders."
Evans was most recently seen in Rent Remixed (Duke of York's Theatre), Dickens Unplugged (Edinburgh Festival), Avenue Q (Noel Coward Theatre) and Minor Irritations (White Bear Theatre).
Johnston's theatre credits include The Master Builder (Albery Theatre), The Mysteries (National Theatre), Hindle Wakes (Royal Exchange Manchester) and Sugar Sugar (Bush Theatre). For television her work includes "Jam & Jerusalem," "The Royle Family," "The Street," "Cutting It," "Happy Together," "Waking the Dead," "My Uncle Silas," "Sex, Chips and Rock & Roll," "The Verdict" and "Brookside." Johnston's film credits include "Imagine You and Me," "Face" and "Brassed Off." Ryan's theatre work includes Lovely & Misfit (Trafalgar Studios) and Sejanus, A New Way to Please You, Believe What You Will and Speaking Like Magpies (Royal Shakespeare Company). For television his credits include "Holby Blue," "Torchwood," "Consenting Adults," "The Tudors" and "Mine All Mine"; and for film, "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day," "Red Light Runners" and "Layer Cake."
Gill previously worked at the Donmar in 2005 when he directed Owen McCafferty's adaptation of Days of Wine and Roses. Gill has directed over 80 productions in the U.K., Europe and North America. He is currently represented in the West End by his production of The Importance of Being Earnest, currently at the Vaudeville. Other recent work includes Gaslight, seen last year at the Old Vic, The Voysey Inheritance and Scenes From a Big Picture (National Theatre), Epitaph for George Dillon (Comedy Theatre) and Look Back in Anger (Theatre Royal Bath). Gill was responsible for introducing D.H. Lawrence's plays to the Royal Court in the 1960s. He was the founding director of Riverside Studios in 1976, and of the National Theatre Studios from 1984–1990. Also as a playwright, his work also includes The Sleeper's Den, Over Gardens Out, Kick for Touch, Cardiff East, Certain Young Men and The York Realist.
The production is designed by Anthony Ward (whose recent credits include the Patrick Stewart Macbeth), with lighting by Hugh Vanstone (Spamalot in the West End and on Broadway).
