News London's Union Theatre to Revive Sondheim's Sweeney Todd; Casting Announced London's tiny Union Theatre in Southwark, near the Tate Modern, will revive Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's 1979 Broadway musical Sweeney Todd in November.

Performances are scheduled to begin Nov. 12 with an official opening the following evening. The production will continue through Dec. 6.

Sasha Regan, who founded the Union Theatre in 1998 and has previously directed Cabaret there and produced the all-male G&S revivals of HMS Pinafore and The Mikado, is director and executive producer. Choreography is by Sally Brooks (who has previously choreographed both HMS Pinafore and The Pajama Game for the Union), musical direction is by Christopher Mundy and musical arrangements are by Alex Weatherhill.

The cast will be led by Christopher Howell as Sweeney Todd and Emma Francis as Mrs Lovett. Howell has previously appeared at the Union as Sir Joseph Porter in HMS Pinafore; other London credits include Anything Goes (National Theatre), My Fair Lady (National), The Witches of Eastwick, Fame, Elvis, Buddy, Peter Pan – the British Musical and What a Performance. On tour he has appeared in South Pacific, Cats and Chicago. Francis has appeared in Fame, Rat Pack and My Fair Lady in the West End, and tours of Anything Goes, Chicago Grease, Tommy and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Also in the company are Stephen Rashbook as Judge Turpin (whose RSC credits include the original production of Nicholas Nickleby in London and New York); Adam Ellis as Tobias (tour of Starlight Express); Leon Kay as Anthony Hope (tour of South Pacific), David Kirstopher-Brown as Pirelli (West End credits include The Phantom of the Opera and Chess at the Royal Albert Hall), Nigel Pilkington as Beadle Banford (continuity announcer for children's TV channel Kix and character voices for the Channel 5 cartoon "Bottle Top Bill & His Best Friend Corky") and Róisín Sullivan as Beggar Woman (lead singer in the Broadway tour of Riverdance in America, Canada, Germany and Dublin).
