Performances kicked off December 2 for the world premiere of Collaboration: Warhol & Basquiat at HERE’s Mainstage Theatre. The new work is a collaboration between playwright and actor Calvin Levels, a Tony nominee for his performance in Open Admissions, and Tony-nominated director Lonny Price. Levels also stars in the play, and Price directs.

Presented by Staged Dreams, performances are scheduled to run through December 22.

Collaboration: Warhol & Basquiat depicts the artistic relationship between iconic pop artist Andy Warhol and revered painter Jean-Michel Basquiat, played by Levels. The play, according to production notes, chronicles their “attempt to navigate the perilous terrain of art and fame while collaborating on a joint series of paintings for their New York City gallery exhibition.“ Ira Denmark plays Warhol, and Frank van Putten plays European art dealer Rudolfo Happesberger.
