Josh Rhodes (the Broadway dancer who was assistant choreographer of The Drowsy Chaperone) is choreographing. Rehearsals begin Feb. 6 toward a March 15-April 8 run in suburban Atlanta.
Casting has not been announced, but the company is expected to include some New York talent along with resident Georgia artists. Ann-Carol Pence will be musical director.
"We still have commercial producers involved," Foster told Playbill.com. "We're hoping to work on it, put it on its feet and keep developing it. We went down to Georgia and cast some people down there and now we are looking for the leads in New York. I'm especially excited because I'm from Georgia so it's a homecoming for me."
The musical is a satiric take on the story of Depression-era American outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow. Another musical called Bonnie & Clyde, by Frank Wildhorn, Don Black and Ivan Menchell, played regional engagements and had a fall run on Broadway (it closes at the Schoenfeld Theatre on Dec. 30).
Lonny Price's directing credits include Broadway's 110 in the Shade, Urban Cowboy, Master Harold…and the boys and A Class Act, and many concerts and stage productions beyond Broadway. Librettist Foster, who recently worked in Arlington, VA, on the world premiere of his new musical The Hollow at Signature Theatre, previously told Playbill.com that there are also discussions about separate productions of his Bonnie & Clyde in Toronto and London. Foster is best known as the Broadway actor of from Little Shop of Horrors (Tony nomination), Urinetown and The Producers. He also penned the libretto to the Off-Broadway musical Summer of '42.
Crom, who is also an actor who has appeared alongside Foster in Broadway's Urinetown, wrote and created Off-Broadway's Newsical the Musical, for which he earned six Drama Desk nominations. The show is currently appearing Off-Broadway at the Kirk Theatre in Theatre Row on West 42nd Street. The revue won the Off-Broadway Alliance Award for Best Musical in 2011. In early 2011, a cast recording was released.
Foster said that his Bonnie & Clyde, beyond being comic, has something to say about fame and celebrity in America, adding that the show's tone is akin to Urinetown.
The production's creative team also includes set designer Phillip Male, costume designer Joanna Schmink, lighting designer Bradley Bergeron, sound designer Bobby Johnston and stage manager Kathryn M. Pelkey.
