Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel is back on Broadway in an all-new production at the Imperial Theatre. The musical, directed by Tony winner Jack O’Brien, will officially open April 12.
The last time Carousel was seen on the Great White Way was the Lincoln Center Theater revival which opened at the Vivian Beaumont Theater on March 24, 1994. The cast featured Audra McDonald as Carrie Pipperidge opposite Michael Hayden as Billy Bigelow, and Sally Murphy as Julie Jordan.
On the anniversary of the opening of the original production, we paged through our old Playbills and found this piece about the show that changed the canon.
To mark the 80th birthday of composer-lyricist Stephen Sondheim in 2010, Playbill.com asked Broadway songwriters to do the impossible—pick their favorite songs by the master.
In a 1985 feature, Playbill spoke to the playwright of groundbreaking As Is before its May 1 Broadway opening, and reported from a rehearsal of the Off-Broadway premiere of The Normal Heart.
