Directed by Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail (In the Heights, Lombardi, Magic/Bird), The Tutors will feature Changchien (Second Stage's Warrior Class and Year Zero) as Kwan, Dellapina (Roundabout's The Dream Of The Burning Boy) as Jow, Dollar ("Guiding Light," Completeness at Playwrights Horizons) as Heidi, Nobbs (Lombardi, The Lion in the Winter) as Toby and Perfetti (Picnic, Off-Broadway's Sons of the Prophet) as Milo.
Opening night is set for June 5 at Second Stage's uptown home, the McGinn/Cazale Theatre on Broadway at 76th Street. Performances will continue through June 16.
Here's how Second Stage bills the new work: "Joe (Dellapina) and Toby (Nobbs), along with the many other residents of New York City who work a job in order to do something else, tutor high school students, while Heidi (Dollar) anonymously helps write college admissions essays online. Together, they run a friendship-finding website from their apartment, except that their work with students starts to invade their lives and, in Heidi's case, her subconscious. The Tutors tests what people who are so plugged into the digital world and online friendship do when confronted by the real thing."
The Tutors will feature scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Jessica Jahn, lighting design by Betsy Adams, sound design by Jill DuBoff and fight direction by Thomas Schall.
Created as a program to help develop and provide exposure for the voices of a new generation of theatre artists, the Second Stage Theatre Uptown Series (Christopher Burney, curator and associate artistic director) seeks to "develop the skills of emerging playwrights, to provide early-career artists with the support of a major artistic institution, and to create new plays for the American Theatre. Each show has a limited rehearsal period, as well as a streamlined budget." The McGinn/Cazale Theatre is located at Broadway and 76th Street, 3rd floor.
