Lucy Kirkwood’s timely drama The Children, which is currently playing on Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre following an acclaimed run at London’s Royal Court, earned the U.K. Writers' Guild Award for Best Play.

The honor was presented in a January 15 ceremony at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Set in a world that has been devastated by a series of life-altering man-made and natural events events, the play chilled London audiences before arriving in New York November 28.

The entire London cast transferred with the production: Francesca Annis (BBC’s Cranford), Olivier Award nominee Ron Cook (Juno and the Paycock), and Olivier Award winner Deborah Findlay (Stanley).

Also honored during the evening was prolific political playwright Caryl Churchill, who was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Writing Award. Kirkwood presented the Downstairs, Top Girls, Love and Information, and Cloud Nine playwright with the honor.
