Classic Arts News Lyric Opera of Chicago Stages 50th-Anniversary Gala Lyric Opera of Chicago celebrates its 50th-anniversary season tonight with a gala concert led by music director Andrew Davis and artistic director emeritus Bruno Bartoletti.
The gala, which features performances by nearly 20 star singers, has sold out, raising nearly $5 million for the opera.

Singers performing at the concert include Ren_e Fleming, Susan Graham, Thomas Hampson, Bryn Terfel, Deborah Voigt, and Frederica von Stade. They will perform works associated the opera's history.

The gala will also honor 24 artists and individuals known as "Jubilarians." Among them are Bartoletti, who was with the company for 41 years; sopranos Mirella Freni and Joan Sutherland; mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne; Maria Tallchief, former artistic director of the Lyric Opera Ballet; and a number of artists who participated in the Lyric's first season in 1954.

The 50th-anniversary season, which runs through April, includes productions of Wagner's Ring cycle, Verdi's Aida, and Beethoven's Fidelio.
