The best of New York City cabaret artists will be celebrated 7:30 PM April 1, when The Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs (MAC) presents the 2002 MAC Awards at Town Hall in Manhattan.
Nominations were announced March 1. Among the nominees are Betty Buckley, Karen Mason, Jim Caruso, songwriter Michael Ogborn (known for Baby Case), Craig Rubano, Sam Harris, Carol Woods, Lea DeLaria, Richard Skipper (the Carol Channing wonder), Mario Cantone, Julie Wilson and more. The gala event is open to the public.
MAC will honor master jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The MAC Board of Directors Awards will go to cabaret chanteuse Karen Akers (of Broadway's Nine and Grand Hotel) and the monthly publication "Cabaret Scenes."
MAC Awards producer Barry Levitt and director-choreographer Pamela Sousa (Romance/Romance, A Grand Night for Singing) will helm the star-filled evening, the biggest annual event in the cabaret community — a crossover family including those in the jazz, recording, Broadway, comedy and nightclub worlds.
Among those performing live at historic Town Hall on 43rd Street April 1 will be Chris Calloway, Peter Cincotti, Scott Coulter, Baby Jane Dexter, Natalie Gamsu, Debbie Gravitte, Audrey Lavine, Heather MacRae, Donna McKechnie, Mark Nadler, Phillip Officer, Martin Pizzarelli, Craig Rubano, Billy Stritch, KT Sullivan, and other special guests. Guitarist John Pizzarelli will perform a special tribute to his father and present him with his Lifetime Achievement Award. Also scheduled to present awards are Bill Boggs, John Bucchino, Jim Caruso, Angela La Greca, Margaret Whiting, Julie Wilson, and Jack Wrangler, and more. MAC Award-winning comedian, Ron Poole, will serve as master of ceremonies. D. Jay Bradley is musical director.
