The two-character musical, seen in a developmental run in Westchester County, NY, in 2004, charts the life story of a couple using old and new songs by the composer (David Shire) and lyricist (Richard Maltby Jr.) who gave us Closer Than Ever, Big, Baby and Starting Here, Starting Now. A Time for Love is conceived and directed by Maltby, who also has his hands full currently with book and lyric contributions to the Broadway-bound musical The Pirate Queen.

As it did in its February 2004 test run in Croton Falls, NY, A Time for Love will feature Lois Robbins and Brian Sutherland. Musical direction is by Dean Mora.

According the to Rubicon Theatre Company, "This sweetly comic, charmingly romantic and touchingly poignant song-cycle features Lois Robbins and Brian Sutherland as characters who fall in love, come together, marry and grow apart. The story begins at the first instant a spark ignites and continues over a lifetime of working, raising children and living in a complicated modern world. The production features familiar favorites as well as original songs by Broadway's dynamic duo Maltby and Shire."

The show came out of a conversation between actress Robbins and lyricist-director Maltby.

Among songs in A Time for Love in 2004 were "The Word Is Love," "The Story Goes On," "One of the Good Guys," "Life Story," "Stop Time," "And What If We Had Loved Like That," "I've Been Here Before"/"It's Never That Easy," "Another Wedding Song," "There" and more.

Lois Robbins is a film, TV and stage actress. Sutherland toured as Sky Masterson in the 50th anniversary Arena Stage production of Guys and Dolls, and recently played the songless American husband in the national tour of The Light in the Piazza.
