LOS ANGELES -- Mamma Mia!, the Benny Anderson & Bjorn Ulvaeus musical based on the songs of ABBA, is coming to the Shubert Theatre in late winter 2001. A smash hit when it debuted in London in 1999, Mamma Mia! achieved equal success when it opened this past May at Toronto's historic Royal Alexandra Theatre, breaking all box office records. The musical, which recently celebrated its first anniversary in London, where it continues to play to SRO audiences, tells the story of Donna, a feisty 40-something single mom, and her daughter Sophie, who travel to a Greek island together. While Donna recalls distant memories of carefree days and careless nights, Sophie dreams of tradition, romance and a big white wedding. The book, written by Catherine Johnson, explores the family conflict between a modern mother and daughter.

Twenty-two of ABBA's best-known songs are featured in the show, including "The Winner Takes All," "Money, Money, Money," "Dancing Queen" and "Mamma Mia," among others. Designed by Mark Thompson, the show is directed by Phyllida Lloyd and choreographed by Anthony Van Laast.
