When the musical, which features the tunes of ABBA, ends its five-and-a-half-year run, it will have played more than 2,300 performances.
In a statement, producer Judy Cramer said, "We have been so welcomed in Las Vegas by local audiences and visitors alike. I am so proud that we have paved the way for other blockbuster shows from London and Broadway to be able to play on the Strip. We have been very fortunate in partnering with Mandalay Bay who continue to support and promote Mamma Mia! in every possible way with us. . . . 2008 promises to be a very exciting year for Mamma Mia! as we are in discussions about bringing the show to new markets, including South America, that rarely get a chance to see live musical theatre."
Mamma Mia! employs the hit songs of famed pop group ABBA to tell the story of Sophie Sheridan, a young girl who hopes to discover the identity of her father. On the eve of her wedding, she brings three men from her mother Donna's past back to the Greek island they visited over two decades ago.
Mamma Mia! features music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, a book by Catherine Johnson, direction by Phyllida Lloyd and choreography by Anthony Van Laast. In New York, the musical plays the Winter Garden Theatre, which is located at 1634 Broadway.
Mamma Mia! plays the Mandalay Bay Theatre Sunday-Thursday at 7:30 PM and Saturday at 6 PM and 10 PM. Tickets, priced $45-$100, are available by calling 703-632-7580 or 703-474-4000 or by visiting www.mandalaybay.com or www.mamma-mia.com.
