News Maria Tucci Joins Off-Broadway's The Stendhal Syndrome, March 28 Maria Tucci joins the cast of Primary Stages' world premiere presentation of Terrence McNally's The Stendhal Syndrome, starring Richard Thomas, March 28.

The actress replaces Isabella Rossellini who originated the two roles in the play that began performances Feb. 1 and opened Feb. 16 at the new Off-Broadway theatre space 59E59 . The limited engagement, originally scheduled through March 27, will now play through April 25.

The Stendhal Syndrome combines two plays: Full Frontal Nudity — about three American tourists who are urged by an Italian guide to bask in the beauty of Michelangelo's "David" — and Prelude & Liebestod — which finds a celebrated conductor watching his life unravel right before his eyes as he leads the opening and ending pieces of Wagner's "Tristan und Isolde."

Both works — which explore characters' inner thoughts — are threaded together with the common theme of "how art can affect us emotionally, psychological, erotically," playwright McNally told Playbill On-Line. The title refers to said intoxication. To read more comments by the scribe, visit Playbill On-Line's Brief Encounter section (or click here).

Tucci has appeared on Broadway in The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore, The Rose Tattoo, The Night of the Iguana, The Deputy, The School for Wives, Spokesong, A Lesson From Aloes, Requiem for a Heavyweight and The Little Foxes. Other credits include Marking, The Substance of Fire, Drinks Before Dinner, The Trojan Women, The White Devil, A Pagan Place, The Gathering and Yerma as well as on television and film in Eugene O’Neill’s "Beyond the Horizon," "Spin City," "Law & Order," "To Die For," "Enormous Changes," "Touch and Go" and "Daniel."

Leonard Foglia directs the work featuring Thomas and the cast that also includes Michael Countryman (Night Must Fall, House and Garden), Jennifer Mudge (Only the End of the World) and Yul Vázquez ("Traffic," "Seinfeld"). The design team for Stendhal includes Michael McGarty (set), David C. Woolard (costumes), Russell H. Champa (lighting), Elaine J. McCarthy (projections) and David Van Tieghem (sound) — who also provides original music.
