The Times described the April arrival as a "play with music," and intimated that Short will be reprising some of his more familiar characters including Ed Grimley and other creations from his "SCTV" and "Saturday Night Live" days, as well as his later cable creation Jiminy Glick. The venture will have an impressive Broadway pedigree: it was created by Short and the Hairspray writing team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

The Times reported that the show was inspired by Short's annual Christmas party. "It's like old-fashioned Hollywood with Marty sitting on a piano and acting like Judy Garland," Mr. Shaiman said.

Short recently starred in the Los Angeles debut of The Producers as Leo Bloom.
