Tony Award-winning Broadway producer Dori Berinstein ("Carol Channing: Larger Than Life," "Show Business: The Road To Broadway") directed, wrote and produced the documentary about Hamlisch, whose numerous accomplishments included the Tony and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical A Chorus Line.

"The Way He Was," according to PBS, "reveals the events that led to both his staggering success and, ultimately, his even greater humanity: his creative process, struggles, inner turmoil, and breakthroughs."

The documentary promises interviews with Steven Soderbergh, Quincy Jones, Christopher Walken, Joe Torre, John Lithgow, Lucie Arnaz, Ann-Margret, Howard Stringer, Kelli O'Hara, Brian D'Arcy James, Melissa Manchester and Hamlisch's wife, Terre Blair Hamlisch.

"Marvin's astounding musical genius was certainly breathtaking, but it was his irrepressible joy for life and his unending generosity that constantly had me in awe. What a tremendous honor and challenge to capture the magic of this singular sensation," Bernstein said in a statement.

It has also been revealed Bernstein was collaborating on a new musical with Hamlisch prior to his death. She is working to finish the musical, which will feature his final score.

The multi-award winner, whose numerous compositions included They're Playing Our Song, The Goodbye Girl, Sweet Smell of Success, "The Way We Were," and more, died Aug. 6, 2012, at the age of 68.

"Marvin Hamlisch: The Way He Was" will air on New York area PBS station Thirteen Dec. 27 at 9 PM. Check local listings.
