Classic Arts News Mary Zimmerman to Direct Ren_e Fleming at Met in 2009-10 Just as director Mary Zimmerman's first production for the Metropolitan Opera — a new Lucia di Lammermoor which opened the company's 2007-08 season last night — takes the stage, word arrives of more collaborations to come.
Met general manager Peter Gelb, in an interview with The Chicago Tribune published this past weekend, revealed that he has engaged Zimmerman to direct a new production of Rossini's rarely performed Armida, to star soprano Ren_e Fleming, in the 2009-10 season.

In May Gelb told the Associated Press that Zimmerman is to stage Bellini's La sonnambula, in a co-production with the Vienna State Opera, during the 2008-09 season. Booked for the title role is coloratura star Natalie Dessay, currently playing the titular madwoman in Zimmerman's Met Lucia.

"As far as I'm concerned," Gelb told the Tribune, "Mary is bringing so much to the art form of opera [that] ... if it's up to me and the Met, she will be creating as many productions here as she wishes to."
