Chicago-based theatre artist Mary Zimmerman will make a journey to the west this fall to stage her Metamorphoses at California's Berkeley Repertory Theatre. The production -- written by Zimmerman after poet Ovid's work of the same name, poetry by Rilke and other sources -- will begin previews Nov. 26 for an opening Dec. 1 and a run through Jan. 16, 2000.
Metamorphoses is staged around a pool of water, which, during the course of the action, becomes a river, an ocean (of tears, no less) and a storm. Among those gathering at this watering hole are King Midas, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Cupid and Psyche.
Metamorphoses premiered in Chicago in 1998. Zimmerman's most recent Windy City outing was The Odyssey, an adaptation of Homer's epic, at the Goodman Theatre. Zimmerman previously visited Berkeley Rep to stage her Journey to the West.
Several actors featured in the original Chicago staging of the play repeat their roles in Berkeley, among them Anjali Bhimani, Adrian Danzig, Raymond Fox, Doug Hara and Chris Kipiniak.
