News Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! Extends in London

Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker! has extended its run at Sadler's Wells.

This high-camp take on the traditional Christmas Ballet has all the humor and imagination that one would expect from one of Bourne's dance productions.

Although he is best known for his reworking of another full-length Tchaikovsky ballet — Swan Lake — Bourne's big break in major ballet came ten years ago when Opera North commissioned him to create a new version of this classic Christmas show.

He has now radically reworked his production, making the first half (usually set in a house but here set in an orphanage) considerably darker, the better to show the glamour of the magic kingdom in the second half. The show has pulled in audiences and, as a result, has now extended its run to Feb. 1, 2003, after which it goes on a national tour.
