Classic Arts Features Mattila to Miss Oct. 14 Performance; Gavrilova is Tosca Maria Gavrilova will sing the title role in Puccini's Tosca Oct. 14 at the Met. Karita Mattila, who is ill, is expected to return for the Oct. 17 performance.

Ms. Gavrilova, a native of Russia, made her Met debut in the title role of Madama Butterfly in 2007, when she stepped in for an ailing colleague. She has also sung the title role of Puccini's Manon Lescaut at the Met. She is a leading soprano at the Bolshoi Opera in Moscow and has sung in many other European theaters as well.

The new production of Tosca directed by Luc Bondy also features Marcelo êlvarez as Cavaradossi and George Gagnidze as Scarpia. Joseph Colaneri conducts.
