Von Essen's official website says the actor will play Dominique in the Paper Mill mounting of the Stephen Schwartz musical. Von Essen replaces Will Chase, who will be part of the cast of the new Broadway musical Lennon. The Paper Mill Baker's Wife will co-star the previously announced Alice Ripley as Genevieve, Lenny Wolpe as the Baker and Gay Marshall as Denise. Gordon Greenberg will direct the Schwartz-Joseph Stein musical, which will play the New Jersey theatre April 13-May 15.

The cult favorite The Baker's Wife — the Broadway-bound musical that never quite made it to Broadway — features the cabaret classic "Meadowlark." Based on the film "La Femme du Boulanger" by Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono, the musical's original cast included Paul Sorvino as the Baker and LuPone in the title role.

Max von Essen recently appeared Off-Broadway in Finian's Rainbow and in the York Theatre's all-star benefit concert of Children of Eden. On Broadway the actor has been seen in Dance of the Vampires, Jesus Christ Superstar and Les Misérables; his Off-Broadway credits include The Fantasticks and John & Paul. Von Essen's regional credits are numerous and include Dorian the Musical, My Fair Lady, Hair, Blood Brothers and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The Paper Mill Playhouse is located on Brookside Drive in Millburn, NJ. Call (973) 376-4343 for more information or visit www.papermill.org.
