News Melbourne Theatre Company to Stage Earnest with Geoffrey Rush; Next to Normal Also Planned The Melbourne Theatre Company will revive its acclaimed 1988 production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest in fall 2011. Tony and Academy Award-winning actor Geoffrey Rush will graduate to the role of Lady Bracknell.

The 2011 season will be the last for MTC artistic director Simon Phillips, who opted to revisit Earnest prior to his departure; he has been artistic director of the company since 2000. He also served as associate director at MTC 1987-1989.

The Importance of Being Earnest will feature Rush ("Shine," Exit the King) and Jane Menelaus, who originally played Jack and Gwendolyn in 1988, as Lady Bracknell and Miss Prism in 2011. The cast will also include Christie Whelan, Toby Schmitz, Bob Hornery and Canon Chasuble. Scenic design is by Tony Tripp.

The 2011 season will also include the world premiere of Don Parties On (Jan. 8-Feb. 12, 2011); A Behanding in Spokane (Feb. 5-March 19, 2011); Apologia (Feb. 18-April 2, 2011); In the Next Room or the Vibrator Play (April 7-May 14, 2011); Next to Normal (April 28-May 28, 2011); The Gift (May 28-July 2, 2011); The Joy of Text (June 10-July 23, 2011); Hamlet (July 19-Aug. 27, 2011); Rising Water (Aug. 5-Sept. 10, 2011); Clybourne Park (Sept. 17-Oct. 22, 2011); and Return to Earth (Nov. 4-Dec. 17, 2011).
