Classic Arts News Memphis Symphony Announces New Season The Memphis Symphony Orchestra's 2006-07 season will celebrate the Shostakovich centennial and feature pianists Leon Fleisher and Horacio Guti_rrez, violinist Leila Josefowicz, and cellist Lynn Harrell.
Shostakovich's work will be highlighted throughout the season, beginning with the opening concert on September 16, when MSO music director David Loebel will conduct the composer's Festive Overture and Violin Concerto No. 1 with soloist Leila Josefowicz. Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 will also be performed.

Leon Fleisher will play Hindemith's left-hand Piano Concerto on a program that also includes Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1 and his Tahiti Trot.

Continuing the Shostakovich celebration, cellist Lynn Harrell will perform the composer's Cello Concerto No. 1, and Victor Ascuncion will play his Piano Concerto No. 2. David Loebel conducts both concerts.

Other highlights include Augusta Read Thomas's Shakin', Mendelssohn's Elijah, and Horacio Guti_rrez performing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3.
