The musical Mermaids, based on the 1990 MGM/UA film and the Patty Dann novel, will make its American premiere in California in May.

Produced in association with MGM Onstage, the show will play the Pechanga Entertainment Center May 10-13 (in Temecula, CA) as well as the California Theatre of the Performing Arts May 17-20 (in San Bernardino, CA).

"Set in the 60's," according to a release, Mermaids follows "the story of the turbulent relationship between a flamboyant, outrageous mother and her two daughters, who just want a normal and stable life." The production also features classic pop hits, including "Johnny Angel," "Shamalama Ding Dong" and "The Shoop Song."

Cher starred as the matriarch in the "Mermaids" film, which was penned by screenwriter June Roberts based on the Dann novel. Richard Benjamin directed the feature, which also starred Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci (as the daughters) with Bob Hoskins.
