Classic Arts News Mezzo Rita Gorr to Make Farewell to Opera Stage This Summer at Age 81 Rita Gorr, the 81-year-old Belgian mezzo soprano, will make her final appearance on the opera stage this summer.
In June and July in Antwerp and Ghent, she will sing the Countess in the Flanders Opera production of Tchaikovsky's Queen of Spades, heralding the end of her 58-year stage career.

Gorr was born as Marguerite Geirnaert in the Belgian town of Zelzate in 1926. She studied in Ghent and then at the Conservatory of Music in Brussels. She made her opera debut in 1949 in Antwerp as Fricka in Die Walk‹re and in 1952 debuted in Paris, where she later sang major roles at the Paris Opera and the Op_ra-Comique.

She made debuts at Bayreuth in 1958, La Scala in 1960 and the Metropolitan Opera in 1962. Her roles included Ortrud in Lohengrin, Amneris in AÇda and Dalila in Samson et Dalila. She originated the role of Mother Marie in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carm_lites in 1957 and in the 1980s began singing the Old Prioress in the same opera.
