Singer and cabaret artist Michael Feinstein will celebrate Independence Day in much the same way he commemorates any occasion -- by playing the music of George Gershwin. Feinstein will perform a Gershwin concert on July 4 with the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. The performance will be simulcast on PBS. Check your local listings for exact times. The event is part of a concert tour of Feinstein's musical tribute, called "The Gershwin Century." Future dates include Oyster Bay, NY (July 12); Oakville, CA (July 18), Foxwoods, CT (Aug. 1); Las Vegas (Aug. 28); Indianapolis (Sept. 16); and Fairfield, CT (Sept. 19).
Feinstein will also release a new Gershwin album, "Nobody But You," later this summer. The entertainer has long been associated with the Gershwins, ever since he worked with lyricist Ira shortly before the composer's death. The exact date of George Gershwin's centennial is Sept. 26, 1998.
