Director Mike Nichols, playwright David Hare and actor Wallace Shawn are getting together to do a play this spring. Each will wear different hats. The Designated Mourner, written by Shawn, will be presented in London at the National Theatre in April and May, directed by Hare--and performed by Nichols.
This marks Nichols first time on stage as a performance since his comedy evenings with Elaine May. He has since made a career as producer and director. He did both jobs on the forthcoming film adaptation of La Cage aux Folles, retitled The Birdcage
Is there a chance he might perform Mourner in the U.S.? he was asked recently. The director grinned sheepishly and said, simply, "None."
