Classic Arts News Minnesota Orchestra to Perform at European Festivals With Dawn Upshaw The Minnesota Orchestra will make its first-ever circuit of the European music festivals this summer, the orchestra announced.
As previously reported, the orchestra will appear at the BBC Proms in London on August 24. Other stops on the tour will include the Robeco Zomerconcerten in Amsterdam on August 23, the Edinburgh Festival on August 25, the Helsinki Festival on August 27 and 28, and the Ascona Festival in Locarno, Switzerland, on August 31.

Repertoire for the festival includes Osvaldo Golijov's Three Songs for Soprano and Orchestra, with Dawn Upshaw as soloist; Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 with Llyr Williams; and the Sibelius Violin Concerto with Viktoria Mullova, as well as Barber's Essay No. 1, Mahler's Symphony No. 5, Beethoven's Symphony No. 3, and Stravinsky's Petrushka.

Music director Osmo V‹nsk‹ conducts.

"It is a tribute to Osmo V‹nsk‹—and his reputation with our Orchestra—that we've been invited to take part in these European festivals," said orchestra CEO Tony Woodcock. "Orchestras frequently offer up sports analogies to explain the importance of touring, comparing an international tour to playing in the Super Bowl. In those terms, a major festival tour is akin to participating in the Olympics."
