Classic Arts News Miriam Hyde, Composer and Pianist, Dies Australian composer and pianist Miriam Hyde died on January 11, the London Telegraph reports. She was 91 years old.
Hyde, who was born in Adelaide, attended the Royal College of Music in London, studying piano with Howard Hadley and composition with R. O. Morris.

While in London, she won three prizes for composition, and performed with the major London orchestras. She performed one of her own works, the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E-flat minor, with the London Philharmonic.

She returned to Australia in 1935 to promote and teach music, and continued to perform: with most of the major Australian orchestras: and write music and poetry.

In 1982 she was awarded the Order of the British Empire, and in 1991, was made an Officer of the Order of Australia. In 2004, she was given the APRA-Australian Music Centre Distinguished Service to Australian Music Award.
