Shannon, who was also recently seen on HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," will play an evil doer named General Zod, according to the New York Times. He joins a cast that includes the previously announced Henry Cavill and Amy Adams as, respectively, Superman and Lois Lane. Also featured will be Kevin Costner and Diane Lane.

In a statement director Snyder said, "Zod is not only one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, but one of the most significant because he has insights into Superman that others don’t. Michael is a powerful actor who can project both the intelligence and the malice of the character, making him perfect for the role."

David S. Goyer is writing the screenplay, based on a story by Goyer and producer Christopher Nolan. Filming will begin this summer with a release scheduled for December 2012, according to Variety.

Shannon, who was Academy Award-nominated for Featured Actor in "Revolutionary Road," appeared in Bug and Our Town at the Barrow Street Theatre.
