The cast of the televised play features Robert Hays, Charles Durning, Kevin Bacon, Howard Hesseman and Marilu Henner. Melvin Bernhardt directed. Mister Roberts, according to press notes, is described as such: "The time is 1945. The setting, a navy cargo ship far from battles raging in the Pacific. Longing to see real action, Lt. Doug Roberts (Robert Hays) wages a war of wills against Capt. Morton (Charles Durning), a petty tyrant whom the rambunctious crew considers 'approximately God.' Allied with Ensign Pulver (Kevin Bacon) and Doc (Howard Hesseman), Roberts finds himself torn between his ambition to serve his country and his duty to serve his men. The production also co-stars Marilu Henner as Nurse Girard."

Tom Heggen and Joshua Logan's Mister Roberts opened on Broadway in 1948; the 1953 film starred Henry Fonda, James Cagney and Jack Lemmon. Logan supervised the script for the 1984 TV production.

Special features on the DVD include a background essay "Mister Roberts on Stage and Screen" and cast filmographies.

The DVD of Mister Roberts, which has a running time of 113 minutes, is priced $24.99. For more information visit www.acornonline.com.
