Benjamin Millepied’s Carmen, a modern film reimagining of the classic opera of the same name, will receive a theatrical release later this year in cinemas across the country.
Starring Oscar nominee Paul Mescal (A Streetcar Named Desire) and Melissa Barrera (In The Heights), the film transports the tragic lovers to the U.S.-Mexico border, where Carmen (Barrera) is forced to flee her home following the brutal murder of her mother. While fleeing, a lawless border guard begins killing other asylum seeking immigrants for sport until Aidan (Mescal), a former Marine struggling with PTSD, stops him through a deadly standoff. Together, they flee, finding common ground while running from encroaching law enforcement.
The film also stars Rossy de Palma, The D.O.C., Benedict Hardie, Richard Brancatisano, and Elsa Pataky. Director Millepied also wrote the screenplay, alongside Alexander Dinelaris and Loïc Barrère.
Featuring a score by Nicholas Britell and extensive dream dance sequences, the film includes original songs by Britell, Taura Stinson, The D.O.C., and Julieta Venegas. According to The Wrap, the film will have theatrical premieres April 21 in New York and Los Angeles ahead of a wider theatrical release.
