The premiere, written by Trav SD and directed by Elyse Singer, is presented by Theatre Askew; it features original music and musical direction by William TN Hall. Performances will run Feb. 12-March 1.
Menken gained worldwide notoriety on Broadway after being stripped to a flesh-colored tunic, tied to the back of a live horse and sent up a four-story papier-maché mountain on stage.
According to press notes, the show is a "biographical reconstruction/ridiculous reimagining of the life of the first international superstar," who the New York Times called "the worst actress on Broadway."
In addition to Pope, the cast also features features Everett Quinton, Jan Leslie Harding, Chuck Montgomery, Tim Cusack and Tiffany Ambercrombie.
Molly Pope is a critically-acclaimed performer whose shows have played Joe's Pub and Ars Nova among others. Her stage credits include Found, The Material World and The Fickle Mistress. Theatre Askew, under the direction of Tim Cusack and Candace Lawrence, is a producer of alternative queer theatre. Established in 2004, it has been nominated twice for GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Off-Off Broadway Play.
