News Murder by Poe — by Never Gonna Dance's Hatcher — World Premieres Nov. 22 The Acting Company's production of Murder by Poe will receive its world premiere Nov. 22 and 23 in Union, N.J.

Presented by Kean University's Professional Theatre Series, the limited engagement will be mounted at the Wilkins Theatre. Murder by Poe was written by Jeffrey Hatcher, who wrote the book for the new Broadway musical Never Gonna Dance. The play, set in a remote mansion on a stormy night, weaves together four of Edgar Allen Poe's tales: "The Tell Tale Heart," "The Black Cat," "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and "The Mystery of Marie Roget."

According to production notes, in Murder by Poe "a traveler arrives to seek shelter and encounters four others who have found their way to this desolate place. As they wait out the storm, each tells how they came to the same room, and every story has to do with murder."

Jeffrey Hatcher's plays and adaptations include Three Viewings, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Scotland Road, To Fool the Eye and The Turn of the Screw. His adaptation of Kaufman and Hart’s The Fabulous Invalid recently premiered at Boston’s Majestic Theatre, and he co-authored the stage version of Tuesdays with Morrie at the Minetta Lane.

Murder by Poe will play the Wilkins Theatre (1000 Morris Avenue in Union, NJ) Nov. 22 at 7:30 PM and Nov. 23 at 3 PM. Tickets, priced $15 $25, are available by calling (908) 737-7469.

* The Acting Company was founded in 1972 by Margot Harley and John Houseman. In its 30 years, the company has produced 77 plays, and its 300 members include such Broadway favorites as Patti LuPone, Kevin Kline, Harriet Harris, Jeffrey Wright, Tom Hewitt, Frances Conroy and Jesse L. Martin.
