PlayBlog NAACP Theatre Awards Honor Jeffrey Wright, Feature Performances by Sheryl Lee Ralph and Obba Babatunde The 20th Annual NAACP Theatre Awards honored Tony Award and Emmy Award winner Jeffrey Wright with a Lifetime Achievement Award Aug. 30 at the Directors Guild of America in Hollywood, according to published reports.


The ceremony also featured performances by Tony Award nominees and fellow former Dreamgirls stars Sheryl Lee Ralph and Obba Babatunde. Ralph performed "That Was Me Then … This Is Me Now" from the Old Globe production of the new musical The First Wives Club, and Babatunde performed "Mr. Bojangles" from the Old Globe's Sammy Davis, Jr. bio-musical Sammy.

Wright received a Tony Award for his performance in Angels in America: Peristroika, and an Emmy for repeating the role in the HBO miniseries based on the play. Also a Tony nominee for Topdog/Underdog, he has appeared on Broadway in Bring in 'Da Noise, Bring in 'Da Funk and will next be seen in the Lincoln Center Theater production of A Free Man of Color.
