Actors, singers, musicians, dancers, stilt-walkers, and the first book of the Bible. This doesn't sound like a pairing that Noah would have made. It is, however, the concoction that the North American Cultural Laboratory (NaCl) have put together to make their new epic, Arca Nova, playing at the Washington Square Church through Oct. 28. The Off-Off-Broadway production began Oct. 11.
The audience of Arca Nova will enter an ark-like vessel and venture on a voyage in which the crew members-turned-actors interpret stories from The Book of Genesis. Billed as a commentary rather than an adaptation, the multi-layered work premiered in August at the NaCl Catskills (the company abbreviates its name as the chemical formula for salt).
NaCl artistic director Brad Krumholz navigates this cast of artists that include Randall Kent Cohn, Benedetta Ferrario, Lidy Lopez Gonzalez, Tannis Kowalchuk, Jill Samuels, Pamela Samuelson, Allison Waters, and Megan Wyler.
Tickets are $12-15 except Wednesdays, which are Pay-What-You-Can performances. To set sail on this journey at the Washington Square United Methodist Church, 135 West 4th St. (off 6th Ave.), call (212) 946-5734.
