Off-Broadway News National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene to Present World Premiere of Amid Falling Walls

The new musical celebrates the resilience and hope of Holocaust survivors through Yiddish song.

National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene has announced the world premiere of Amid Falling Walls (Tsvishn Falndike Vent), which is set for a limited engagement November 14–December 10. The new musical will officially open November 20 at Edward J. Safra Hall at New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage.

Amid Falling Walls is curated and arranged by NYTF’s Artistic Director Zalmen Mlotek, with a libretto by Avram Mlotek, and direction by Motl Didner. The cast features Steven Skybell, Abby Goldfarb, Avram Mlotek, and Daniella Rabbani, with additional casting to be announced soon.

The musical celebrates the resilience and hope of Holocaust survivors. The piece, which is presented in Yiddish song with English subtitles, features firsthand survivor testimonies. Through poetry and music, the show presents an authentic retelling using the words and music of those who lived the events.

Amid Falling Walls (Tsvishn Falndike Vent) is not just a musical; it's a testament to the strength, resilience, and creativity of the human spirit,” Zalmen Mlotek says. “With a focus on hope, endurance, and the power of Yiddish song, this production will engage and inspire audiences while honoring an important historical legacy.”

NYTF also notes that much of the included materials are accessible due to the efforts of Shmerke Kaczerginski, who worked to collect songs of those who lived through the Holocaust. Yosl Mlotekl and Chana Mlotek also collected and translated several of the featured songs.

The production will feature scenic design by Jessica Alexandra Cancino, costume design by Izzy Fields, lighting design by Yael Lubetzky, sound design by Dan Moses Schreier, and projection design by Brad Peterson. Choreography is by Tamar Rogoff, and orchestrations are by Frank London and Michael Winograd. The creative team also includes production stage manager Jason Brouillard, assistant stage manager Robert Cott, casting assistant Meredith Hoddeson, and assistant scenic designer Madeline Goddard. Production management is by TINC Productions (Duncan Northern, Joshua Bernard, and Madilyn Kellner). Casting is by Jamibeth Margolis, CSA.
