"We're going to do 16-18 [episodes of 'Smash'] this year," NBC Entertainment chairman Robert Greenblatt told E! Online.

He added that the network wants to "run ['Smash'] sequentially week after week with new episodes" beginning in the winter and said, "I couldn't be happier with ‘Smash.’"

New fall comedies include "Go On," which will air 9-9:30 PM ET on Tuesday nights; "The New Normal," which will follow “Go On”; and "Animal Practice" and "Guys with Kids," which are set for Wednesday nights at 8 PM ET and 8:30 PM ET, respectively.

"Go On" centers on a sportscaster (Matthew Perry) who tries to move on from loss and finds comfort among the members of his group therapy sessions. Tony Award winner Laura Benanti plays Lauren, the leader of the support group, and Julie White plays Anne, a feisty and recently widowed woman stuck in the anger stage of grief.

Ryan Murphy and Allison Adler’s comedy "The New Normal" features Book of Mormon Tony nominee Andrew Rannells, Tony Award winner Ellen Barkin, stage and screen actor Justin Bartha and Scottish actress Georgia King. The single-camera project is described as "a heartwarming comedy about a blended family of a gay couple, Bryan (Rannells) and David (Bartha), and the woman who becomes a surrogate (King) to help them start a family." Other midseason series include "Save Me," starring Anne Heche; "1600 Penn," a White House family comedy starring Mormon's Josh Gad, Bill Pullman and "Hairspray" actress Brittany Snow; "Next Caller," with Christopher Fitzgerald; "Do No Harm," the TV medical drama created by playwright David Schulner and starring Steven Pasquale; "Infamous," featuring Tony nominee Victor Garber and Tate Donovan; and "Hannibal," which will star Venus in Fur’s Hugh Dancy.

Other returning scripted series are "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "The Office," "30 Rock," "Community," "Parenthood," "Parks and Recreation," "Whitney" and "Up All Night."  The alternative series returning are "The Celebrity Apprentice," "Fashion Star," "The Biggest Loser" and "Betty White's Off Their Rockers." Also renewed are "Dateline NBC" and "Rock Center with Brian Williams."
