Harris opened the three-and-a-half-hour evening with "Moving Pictures," a song penned by Academy Award-winning "Frozen" songwriters Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Up Here). Some of his jokes, however, were deemed inappropriate or insensitive by critics.
Via Twitter Harris, who won a 2014 Tony for his performance in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, said, "My iphone shattered the morning of the Oscars. I probably should have read more into that. #harbinger"
Ratings for the annual Oscar broadcast were the lowest in six years, with an average of 36.6 million viewers watching the ABC program, according to the New York Post. Last year's Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, were seen by 43 million viewers.
Harris has also been seen on Broadway in Proof, Cabaret and Assassins.
