News Neil Patrick Harris Offers "Shattering" Response to Oscar Critics Tony winner Neil Patrick Harris has responded to those who criticized his work as host of the 87th Academy Awards, which were broadcast on ABC Feb. 22.

Harris opened the three-and-a-half-hour evening with "Moving Pictures," a song penned by Academy Award-winning "Frozen" songwriters Robert Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Avenue Q) and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (Up Here). Some of his jokes, however, were deemed inappropriate or insensitive by critics.

Ratings for the annual Oscar broadcast were the lowest in six years, with an average of 36.6 million viewers watching the ABC program, according to the New York Post. Last year's Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, were seen by 43 million viewers.

Harris has also been seen on Broadway in Proof, Cabaret and Assassins.
