Tony Award-winning stage and screen star Neil Patrick Harris will direct the upcoming Kennedy Center production of Jonathan Larson's tick, tick...BOOM! The production was originally slated to open at the D.C. venue's Eisenhower Theater October 6, but will now open on January 26, 2024, for a run scheduled through February 4.

The musical follows the young composer during a milestone birthday in 1990, through his theatrical ambitions and his relationships and friendships against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic. The work started life as a “rock monologue” that Larson, best known for his Broadway musical Rent, himself performed as a solo show. Five years after his 1996 death, the work was adapted into a three-character musical, with David Auburn filling in as a script consultant. That version has since played Off-Broadway, in London, and at theatres around the world. Lin-Manuel Miranda directed a 2021 film adaptation for Netflix starring Andrew Garfield.

Tick, tick….BOOM! has always held a special place in my heart, so revisiting this incredible show as the director is a thrilling new challenge,” says Harris. He notes that he will offer a "new take" on Larson's semi-autobiographical musical.

Best known as a Tony-winning screen and stage actor, Harris has previously directed productions of Rent at The Hollywood Bowl, The Expert at the Card Table at the Broad Stage Theater, and Nothing to Hide at The Geffen Playhouse, along with an episode of How I Met Your Mother, the TV series Harris starred in from 2005-2014.

Casting and further creative team information will be announced at a later date.
