Classic Arts News New Ballo Opens at Covent Garden A new production of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera, directed by Italian stage and film director Mario Martone, opens at the Royal Opera House tonight.
The production stars Marcelo Alvarez as Riccardo, Thomas Hampson as Renato—both are singing their roles for the first time—and Karita Mattila as Amelia. ROH music director Antonio Pappano is the conductor.

Martone, the director of five films, including Morte di un matematico napoletano, has directed four operas. His vision of Ballo is largely realistic, he told the Times. "I feel quite free to be as naturalistic or not as I choose," he said. "[But] just wait until the last act!"

The production runs through April 30.
