New York magazine is reporting that Disney is seeking to remake a film version of West Side Story, the 1957 musical that was made into an Oscar-winning movie in 1961. The story says Disney has approached lyricist Stephen Sondheim, librettist Arthur Laurents, director Jerome Robbins and the estate of composer Leonard Bernstein with a $10 million offer for the project.
No cast was mentioned, but Disney reportedly wants to update the show to the 1990s. Bernardo Bertolucci has been approached about directing, according to the story, which said the surviving collaborators will meet in late September to discuss the offer.
