Featuring book and lyrics by Barbara Zinn Krieger and music by Charles Greenberg, José Limón will be directed by Brad Malow and will play the Lovinger Theatre in the Bronx Jan. 23-30, 2009.

Following its premiere, the production will play Manhattan's Symphony Space (Jan. 31-Feb. 4, 2009) and the Goldstein Theatre in Brooklyn (Feb. 5-13, 2009), prior to making its West Coast debut at Stanford Lively Arts (Feb. 18-19, 2009).

Diego Rodriguez stars in the title role with Talia Barzilay, Henry Gainza, Matt Leddy and Angela Stellute. The musical, according to press notes, concerns Limón's "exodus with his family to the United States at age 5 during the Mexican Civil War, through his struggle to find an artistic outlet and finally to his triumph as one of the greatest male dancers/choreographers of all time."

Presented by Making Books Sing, José Limón: The Making of an Artist features choreography by Eric Jackson Bradley with designs by Jack Mehler (set design), Douglas Cox (lighting design), Bill Grady (sound design) and Tracy Christensen (costume design).

Limón, who died in 1972, is best known for his works The Moor's Pavane, There is a Time, Missa Brevis, Psalm and The Winged. In addition to founding his dance company in 1946, Limón was a faculty member in the Juilliard School's Dance Division beginning in 1953, and the director of Lincoln Center's American Dance Theatre from 1964-65.
