News New Musical A Second Chance Begins Previews at the Public Theater March 18 A Second Chance, the new musical by Ted Shen that stars husband and wife actors Brian and Diane Sutherland, begins previews March 18 at the Public Theater.

Directed by Jonathan Butterell (Into the Woods, Assassins, The Light in the Piazza), A Second Chance will officially open March 30. Performances continue through April 13 in the Shiva Theater.

A Second Chance had its world premiere at the Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA, in 2011. The production marks Shen's debut as a composer.

Brian Sutherland (1776, Victor/Victoria) and Diane Sutherland (She Loves Me), who also starred in the Signature Theatre premiere, portray Dan and Jenna, respectively. Butterell also helmed the premiere.

Here's how it's billed: "A stirring musical journey, A Second Chance tells the New York story of a recent widower and a divorcée who meet in mid-life and mid-crisis. Presented with the overwhelming challenge of freeing themselves from their painful pasts, neither feels deserving of happiness. Yet, the awakening of unanticipated feelings leads them to a possibility they both least expected to find."

The musical has scenic design by Robert Brill, costume design by Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Jen Schriever, sound design by Jonathan Deans, projections by Rocco DiSanti and music direction by Zak Sandler. After a 30-year career at the investment bank, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, where he had served as Chairman of the DLJ Capital Markets Group since 1984, Ted Shen retired in 1999 to refocus his attention on his non-profit board work in education and the arts, The Shen Family Foundation, and his own composing. The Shen Family Foundation, of which Shen and his wife, Mary Jo Shen, are co-executive directors, provides funding support for the commissioning programs at Signature Theatre and the Public Theater for new musical theatre works by composers who write with exceptional originality; major productions of works by Stephen Sondheim; and the Shen Musical Theater Curriculum at Yale University.
