Playbill.com reported about the project at the 2013 Tony Awards, where Pasek and Paul said that Tony Award nominee Michael Greif, known for directing groundbreaking contemporary musicals such as Rent and Next to Normal, would direct.

Greif, currently represented on Broadway with If/Then, will direct the lab, which will be held March 9-26, 2015. The book is by playwright Steven Levenson (The Unavoidable Disappearance of Tom Durnin).

Paul previously told Playbill.com that the musical is "an idea that we've had since college, and we're finally getting a chance to write it." According to the Equity casting notice, the project is "about connections, lost and found."

The creative team is seeking "actors who are great and unique physical storytellers."

Pasek and Paul, who are Tony nominees for the original score of A Christmas Story, the Musical, also penned the score to the Off-Broadway musical Dogfight.
